“At its best, it is meant to give a view of modern nuclear war that is more grounded than “everybody would die” (lots of people would die, but not everybody, for both better and worse)”

It occurs to me that nuclear war gets treated almost like if you refused to wear a seatbelt because in a car accident you would be sure to die instantly. Ignoring all the other potential outcomes that could have been avoided or mitigated with taking the extra precaution.

Kind of funny how the public has such an all or nothing, “what can you do” mentality about this or any other large scale problems (such as climate change).

I find the researched targeting choices interesting. Surprisingly, France is virtually untouched while Italy is obliterated. I would have thought the French Atlantic coast naval bases would be worth a few bombs. I was also surprised that Canada didn't get any "love." At the least I would have expected The Hole in North Bay to have gotten a couple of nukes. As you said, it's not meant to be 100% accurate, but France especially surprised me.

Is the target list available anywhere? Keen to see if I get nuked!

Alex, I am wondering with rise of global jihad if this somehow will totally change future equations? if and when parts of europe falls to Islam, I hope NATO has the good sense to spike the firing mechanisms, remove the plutonium cores, and blow up the weapon depots, or at ferry them to somewhere safe while there is time. I worry that we might see a replay of the fall of Afghanistan or the attempted takeover of the Incerlik base through armed groups at the gates. "And if your the last one there, hit the self destruct switch!"

For some reason the blow-counterblow sequence PLAN A and musical tones that emerge out of 1945-1988 combine in my mind... and brings to mind the musical sequence/alien encounter in Close Encounters of the 3rd kind.

And jeez *shudder* I had it playing the background while I was typing, and got to the "the computer is taking over this conversation" line... shades of WOPR. And Colossus. (The Forbin one, not the Bletchley Park one.)

Play the five tones... Would you like to play a game?

Somewhat off-topic, but are recent thoughts on Russian rocket and warhead reliability? The Ukraine war would indicate the co-efficient is not 1... Is it . 98? .5?
